Brain Tumour
The incidence of brain tumours is approximately 3–4 per 100,000 (one lakh) population per year. Specialized care focused on preserving neurological function and quality of life.
Understanding Brain Tumour
Brain tumours are broadly classified into Primary Brain Tumours (arising from the brain tissue itself or its coverings) and Secondary Brain Tumours (metastatic spread from cancers elsewhere in the body).
Primary tumours are graded from Grade I to Grade IV based on aggressiveness and likelihood of recurrence. While not all brain tumours are malignant, higher grades are more aggressive and have a poorer prognosis.
It is important to note that some tumours are benign and potentially curable, especially WHO Grade I tumours such as meningiomas.
Secondary (Metastatic) brain tumours originate from cancers elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain. The most common primary sources for these are Lung cancer and Breast cancer.
Common Symptoms
- Headache (typically worse in the early morning)
- Vomiting and Blurred vision
- Gradual onset weakness of limbs
- Slurring of speech and communication changes
- Behavioural changes and memory impact
- Seizures (a key presenting feature of neurological disruption)
Risk Factors
- Previous radiation exposure to the head
- Certain inherited genetic syndromes (e.g., Li-Fraumeni syndrome)
- History of primary cancer elsewhere (most commonly Lung or Breast)
- Exposure to certain occupational chemicals or toxins
- Increasing age and weakened immune status
Our Treatment Approach
Multidisciplinary, evidence-based treatment tailored to each patient.
Diagnosis & Grading
High-quality imaging (MRI/CT) and biopsy to determine pathology and WHO Grade (I-IV).
Neurosurgery
Maximal safe resection to reduce intracranial pressure and provide tissue for definitive diagnosis.
Radiation Therapy
Precision external beam radiation or stereotactic radiosurgery targeted to the tumor while protecting healthy brain tissue.
Chemotherapy & Systemic Therapy
Systemic treatments guided by the molecular biology and grading of the tumor.
Neuro-Rehabilitation
Multidisciplinary speech, physical, and occupational therapy to recover and maintain neurological function.
