A Pioneer in Demographic Registration
The Cancer Institute (W.I.A) is the pioneer in demographic cancer registration in the state of Tamil Nadu. Our comprehensive registry systems provide critical data for initiating statewide screening programs and cancer control initiatives.
MMTR
The Madras Metropolitan Tumour Registry (MMTR) has been in vogue since 1981, covering the entire metropolitan population of Chennai city.
DACR
The Dindigul Ambilikkai Cancer Registry (DACR) was established in 2003, covering the entire district of Dindigul and catering to a predominantly rural population.
Registry surveillance statistics provided significant leads for initiating the statewide screening program for cancers of the uterine cervix and female breast under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) in 2008.
Tamil Nadu Cancer Registry Project
TNCRP is a collaborative study by the Cancer Institute (W.I.A) and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu for statewide cancer surveillance since 2012.
Government orders issued in 2012 and 2018 have strengthened TNCRP operations, declaring cancer as a notifiable disease in Tamil Nadu.
The Largest Registry in the World
TNCRP caters to an estimated population of 8 crores, the largest covered by any registry globally. Its primary objective is to elicit the realistic burden of new cancer cases in Tamil Nadu.

Modus Operandi
TNCRP social investigators visit potential data sources to scrutinize medical records and registers.
Data is abstracted using TNCRP notification forms, either as hard copies or electronic line-lists.
TNCRP data has been accepted in the flagship publications of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a body of the WHO, and the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR).
TN-CReSt: Analytics for Action Against Cancer
Tamil Nadu – Cancer Registry Statistics (TN-CReSt) is an online tool meant for high-resolution analytics. It provides facility for online analysis of cancer incidence data by age, gender, year, and geography.
