Foundation & Continental Expansion (1950s–1970s)
First comprehensive cancer center in South India established—the second one in the entire country
Introduced the super-voltage era in the whole of Asia, including Japan and Australia, with the installation of the 60 Co radiotherapy unit (GRT at AEC, Canada)
Established India's first center in the Department of Nuclear Medical Oncology; the CAE was established in the Isotope Division
First-ever Medical Physicist Department established at the Institute
Combined modality approach for cancer treatment introduced for the first time by the institute, raising the cure rate from a dismal 1% to 58%
Pioneering Services & National Recognition (1980s–1990s)
First pediatric Oncology Center in the country established; introduced the technique of Lymphangiography in the diagnostic modality of lymphoid tumors
First full-fledged Stalk-core-biopsy unit in India established; featured in the Institute with the support of Dr. Hiralay Bhoute
Recognized by the Universities of Madras and Kerala for Ph.D in Oncological Sciences; training facility established for specialized oncological training within India
Established as the Regional Centre for Cancer Research and Treatment by Dr. Kiran Singh, Union Health Minister; later declared the first center in the country to be designated this
Declared as a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Director General of Health Services/Government of India; Hyperthermia in the treatment of cancer introduced; Oxygen Therapy in the treatment of cancer & Blood Transfusion services started
Advanced Technology & Clinical Excellence (2000s–2010s)
Recognized by Amity University and Amrta Health for M.Sc (Medical Physics) course; first training offered for precision medicine
Weekly Tumor Registry (WMTR) established by Indian Council of Medical Research at the institute
First college of Oncological Sciences in India, offering super specialty degrees, M.Ch(Surgical Oncology), DM(Medical Oncology) and training in cancer diagnosis & treatment of cancer in the country
Introduced endoscopic LASER Surgery for malignant tumors of the bone using custom-made prosthesis
First intra-operative Radiotherapy (IORT) facility & first indigenously designed and built stereotactic radiosurgery unit (ICDR) and immunotherapy
First intra-operative Radiotherapy (IORT) facility & first indigenously designed and built stereotactic radiosurgery unit; also established the first internationally recognized TPS core training facility in the country for radiotherapy medicine
TMH (Tumor Marker Registry [WMTR]) was established by the Indian Council of Medical Research at the institute
Development and Phase 1 evaluation of a Dendritic Cell Vaccine for the treatment of cancer
Establishment of National Tumor Bank; Establishment of 'Salvedene Facility' with six patient centers to provide 24/7 oncology follow-ups across the globe, with specialized focus on supportive oncology
Modern Innovation & Global Recognition (2017–Present)
Establishment of Centre of Excellence for Molecular Oncology
Installation of first Robotic Surgical facility in the country; Phototherapy simulator with cone beam facility, the best facility in the country

Tamil Nadu Cancer Registry Project - joint project of Cancer Institute (WIA) and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu
Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Diagnosis and Prevention program in the country; started with key focus on integrated oncology care
All patients received computerized treatment despite the challenges posed by COVID-19
Aligning AI with Exclusive Endotherapy care & CDI (Comprehensive Digital Integration) launched
